- If you ever got to use the Mac emulator on a Mac XL - it highlighted how fixed Mac gui layout fit the 9” Mac screen like a glove. The extra screen resolution on the 12” screen was there but the menu stopped at the 9” mark. I had a Mac XL for a while but traded up to a Mac II when a/ux became available. A happier time in computing.
- For 8 bits - Fuji net. Basically gives you mass storage access over a network. Atari, apple, coco , Adam and I saw some prelim work for IBM PC.
- The skeuomorphic era was one I appreciated. The artistry and little details were wonderful. Now everything looks the same. Boring.
- Thats some vintage workstation pr0n....
- Interesting paper. But not going to lie CRT in the title triggered me for TUI and ASCII art …
- I’ve lived the dongle life for 40 years because Steve jobs didn’t want people tinkering with the insides of the Mac. My ProFile and HD20 is testament to that.
- Like owning Cisco Catalyst 6509 chassis.
- Very much an OG Windows feels. Especially the font.
- I get more Amiga-ish vibes from it, but maybe that's just the default look of the text and system icons, with their 1:2 pixel aspect.
It's not clear why the system charset and icons didn't receive higher resolution updates when 640x480 became available. It sure is weird seeing them sharing the same UI widgets with modern-looking, anti-aliased fonts... at first glance I thought the screenshots were edited(!)
- The Toronto Pet Users Group (TPUG) is still going. Famous enough to have a wikipedia page.

Sadly, most of the user groups I was part of disbanded in the pandemic and never thought to take things up again afterwards.
- Does the window system used to display the Morris worm code look like Borland/Turbo C++ ? Am I just a big nerd for this ?

On the Apple, Woz leaned into NTSC and employed it to what I consider pretty great effect.
Dithers are contrived uses, not abuses!
The difference is one can dither on any display system and achieve visuals that convey greater color depth or more intensity granularity than the system design intent would allow for.
Again, on the Apple, artists would combine artifact colors, as well as the lack of color, say black and white, in ways that suggest other colors not intended.
The dot patterns can suggest various intensities and hues one cannot just ask for jn a COLOR = statement.
Does that help?
I will try and find an image or two to link a bit later.

I do not think it matches up. Too bad! But maybe the author will share details. I really wanted to know what they did.
Also, after I get past this appointment, maybe we can chat about dither vs artifact.
