Oh yeah :) I remember hosting 2 LAN parties myself, playing Q1, UT, C&C, Starcraft. Good memories.

Well, LAN parties are not going to comeback I think, we have way too fast Internet connections. BUT! There is no reason to use those internet to build VPN Overlay networks to use for gaming/computing/whatever. They can get really large like DN42.

I myself run such a network, unfortunatelly, there is no much peers as seems people are not yet interested in such networking.

It’s a cultural phenomenon. PC Bangs in Korea seem to still thrive. Maybe it’s still a solo endeavour when visiting such a place but it’s at least possible to have a pop up lan party.

I have local copy of that in my fun directory :)

I was 14 or 15 when I first read it. Learning C on PC to get ready for windows, Mac, ST and Amiga coding - first read I thought was serious and I was never going to be a real programmer.

If you ask my colleagues they might say I’m still not ;-)

Hehe, I am feeling sometimes like real programmer when I do disassembly of some old programs or games to hack stuff :)

Reading opcodes, binary patching.. Hard stuff, when you fight for few bytes to do jmp to add extra little functionality or fix a bug.

Yeah. My first disassembly to bypass license check in a game by checking for “license found true” to “license found false” was a bewitching drug it was also like Prometheus stealing fire. Yes I know. But to a 12 year old with a $2/week allowance with games costing $35. A few indulgences was gonna be ok.

My favorite version was Descent Freespace 2. This was absolutly amazying game. The scale! The plot! And the ending!! I must replay it one day :)

You should try the version with updated engine and graphics. https://www.hard-light.net/ It has a nice modding community.

Hah, I am a big fan of RPN and dc calculator. I used to use bc for quite a bit of time, but for some reason I moved to dc and never looked back. Doing calc on stack based calc is so much easier :)

ViM is great. I remember my first serious job when I had to touch Sun servers. The only editor there was VI of course, so I had to learn it. But, after a while I started to like it. To the point that now, I use it everywhere, even on my Windows using native gVim build.

Hah, I still use good old WinAmp 2.81; I never was really to that skin stuff. Clean GUI is best, and most of time it sits in tray anyway, playing music.

I really like Best viewed In section :) Respect. I myself try to make my webpages as light as possible and viewable by any browser if possible.
  • Borg 574 days ago | parent | on: Blast from the Past: Borland C++ on Windows 98
Uh, yeah, Win95 and Win98.. I remember I was happy user of those two. But after migrating myself to Win2000 (in 2001 I think) it was like change from night to day. I recently tried Win98 VM too, and command interface o Win98 is absolutly terrible. Win2000 provide some basic ANSI terminal capabilities so you can use CYGWIN shell nicely. This is as far as I can go back..

Still, its pretty nice overview. I didnt know that there are so many (failed? haha) APIs for Windows. I myself used only Win32 and MFC. Actually, I still ocasionally use Win32 API to write simple things like this one:
