Vi has two modes. The mode you make mistakes in and the mode that beeps at you. :-)
I used Stevie on OS/2 and I carrried a vi 3.5” floppy I got from watcom for a long time because it was a standard editor I could use at alien DOS computers I would be asked to troubleshoot.
ViM is great. I remember my first serious job when I had to touch Sun servers. The only editor there was VI of course, so I had to learn it. But, after a while I started to like it. To the point that now, I use it everywhere, even on my Windows using native gVim build.
Recently, I acquired a Zorba CP/M machine, which was my first back in the 80s. I had forgotten how simple but kind of clunky ED was, and didn’t know any backstory of it until now. Really fun! I’m trying to stay true to vim, but it’s hard with sublime text and all the intellij tools right there.
First. Congratulations. I’m very envious. I’ve only ever been Zorba adjacent but always fascinated by the device. MicroEmacs is supposed to be good. I used vedit but lord knows if it’s still available.
