PDP and Vax were the MacIntosh of the big iron era. Well built, well designed and beloved by those who had access to them with fantatical devotion. IBM, Sperry, Burroughs slugged it out for Mainframe contracts with government - where as DEC and its mini computers built the hardware for the rest of us.
